The Ecobee SmartThermostat family (including SmartThermostat Premium, Enhanced, and ecobee3 lite) operates on 24VAC low-voltage residential HVAC systems. Unlike traditional battery-operated thermostats, Ecobee requires continuous 24VAC power via a dedicated C (Common) wire or the included Power Extender Kit (PEK) adapter.

Standard 5-Wire Setup

Direct terminal connection where a dedicated C-wire exists in the wall bundle to power the thermostat display continuously.

4-Wire PEK Installation

Installs inside the furnace blower cabinet to multiplex G and Y lines, providing continuous 24VAC return without pulling new wire.

SmartSensors (Occupancy)

Remote room probes detecting temperature and occupancy to balance hotspot and cold draft room averages.

Step-by-Step Installation & Wiring Guide

  1. Cut Circuit Power: Switch off the breaker supplying your furnace/air handler and A/C unit before touching any wires.
  2. Label Existing Wires: Take a photo of your old thermostat base and apply the provided Ecobee wire labels.
  3. Mount the Backplate: Use the integrated level on the Ecobee baseplate to secure it to the wall.
  4. Insert Wires into Push Terminals: Press the terminal release lever and insert the bare copper wire into its matching port. Always insert single power wires into Rc (not Rh).
  5. Attach Display Faceplate: Push the Ecobee unit straight into the baseplate until it clicks flush against the wall.

Troubleshooting & System Diagnostics

Diagnostics, Threshold Settings & SmartSensor Troubleshooting

Ecobee Won't Power On (Blank Screen Diagnostics)
  • Blown Furnace Fuse: Check the low-voltage 3-amp or 5-amp automotive fuse on the furnace control board. If blown, replace with an identical amperage rating.
  • Furnace Door Safety Switch: Ensure the furnace blower compartment panel is fully seated. The push-button door switch cuts all 24VAC power when opened.
  • Tripped Condensate Float Switch: If the A/C drain line backs up, the float switch cuts the 24VAC `R` wire to prevent water overflow. Clear the PVC condensate trap.
  • Voltage Check: Use a multimeter across `Rc` and `C` at the wall base; normal voltage reads between 24VAC and 29VAC.
How to Reset and Pair an Unresponsive SmartSensor

If a remote SmartSensor drops connection or will not scan:

  1. Remove the battery cap and take out the CR2477 coin cell battery.
  2. Place the battery in upside down (+ side down) for 10 seconds to discharge residual capacitor energy.
  3. Remove the battery, insert it back positive side up (+ facing you), and snap the cover shut.
  4. Open the Ecobee mobile app → tap Add DeviceSensor → scan the QR code.
Recommended Advanced Threshold Settings

Access on the physical thermostat via Main Menu → Settings → Installation Settings → Thresholds → Configure Staging (Manually):

Threshold ParameterRecommended SettingPurpose
Compressor Min Cycle Off300 Sec (5 min)Prevents compressor short-cycling and burnout.
AC Overcool Max2°F (1.1°C)Runs A/C past setpoint to reduce high indoor humidity.
Compressor Min Outdoor Temp35°F (1.7°C)Locks out heat pump compressor in extreme freezing temps to switch to auxiliary gas/heat strips.
